GENERAL GUIDELINES FOR WRITING CONTRIBUTORS

Approach

o The book will be published in English. Please submit your manuscript in English, if possible. If submitted in Portu-guese, Portuguese Heritage Publications will need to contract, and pay for, translation services.

o In addition to the Azorean residents and current Portuguese-American immigrant community, the largest target audi-ence for the book will be the general public and second and third-generation Portuguese-Americans, and not just aca-demics. Make an effort to maintain a straightforward, attention-grabbing, and interesting writing style.

o As this book will cover a great number of topics, an in-depth presentation of the topics will not be possible. This work may provide the basis for additional in-depth work in the future.

Your Manuscript

o Please keep in mind the other topics of the book to avoid unnecessary overlapping.

o Transitions from topic to topic will be important, both with introductions at the beginning of new chapters and an in-troducing the next topic, whenever appropriate.

o This book will be a repository of essays, experiences, views, and perspectives rather than a formal history of this event. Personal testimonials and references from real people who lived the experiences you are writing about are HIGHLY SUGGESTED and ENCOURAGED. Illustrate your essays with personal stories!!!

o For bibliographic references and end notes (when applicable) use the APA Manual style standards.

Content

o Although the book is about the last wave of immigration, at times, it may be important to refer to the Portuguese-American community or the American host societies in the context of the pre-1957 setting.

o While we do not intend to make this publication a “photo album,” illustrations will be very important to capture the readership and enhance the stories. Whenever possible, submit photos to accompany your article. Do not send us original photos. Please have them scanned. The photos will have to be at least 5”x7” scanned at 300 DPI on a JPEG or TIFF format. Resolution below 300 DPI will not be accepted. They can be sent to my email address: goulartT@comcast.net (you may use zip file). If you are submitting several photos, please send them by CD to: PHPC - P.O. Box 32517 - San Jose, CA 95152.

o Topics will not necessarily be presented as independent chapters in the book. Some contributions may be treated as subchapters of a larger heading. Whenever that happens all authors will be appropriately acknowledged as contributors at the beginning of each chapter.

o Be aware that a portion of the book will be dedicated to personal/family stories. During your research, if you find or come across anyone whom you believe his/her story may be singled out and featured as an independent story, please inform me of the name(s) and phone number/email address for follow-up.

Procedures

o All manuscripts will be submitted to a professional editor, Marilyn Harper (Fresno, Calif.) for review, suggestions, and to avoid excessive repetition or duplication of information by several different authors/ contributors. The project coor-dinators will review the content of the final version. All manuscripts are due no later than September 30, 2007, unless specific arrangements are made. No exceptions. If submitting your manuscript in Portuguese, please try to submit it as early as possible and no later than August 31, to allow us time for proper translation and review by authors.

o This book is a larger task than many can imagine. If your manuscript is ready before September 30, please submit it as soon as you have it in “final” form. We are working with very demanding deadlines and different chapters can be ed-ited and prepared independently of others. The earlier you submit your manuscript, the easier it will be to complete this challenging and interesting project. (ÉI wish we could offer an incentive program!!!!)

o The final editing, order of articles, selection of contributions for the book will be the entire responsibility of the editor Marilyn Harper, José Couto Rodrigues (President of PHPC) and project coordinators, Tony Goulart and Henrique Dinis (Directors of PHPC)

o Minor changes made to original manuscripts will not be resubmitted to authors for approval. If considerable or major changes are made, authors will be supplied a copy of the revision for their final review

WE THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR EFFORT AND TIME DEDICATED TO THIS PROJECT.

YOUR WORK WILL BE A MAJOR CONTRIBUTION TO THE PRESERVATION

OF AN IMPORTANT ASPECT OF THE HISTORY OF THE PORTUGUESE PRESENCE IN AMERICA.

NOTES FROM TONY GOULART (PROJECT COORDINATOR) (Guidelines - Page 2)

o First of all, I want to express my deepest gratitude for your willingness to accept our invitation to be part of this project, especially because of its tight schedule. I am depending on you to help us make it happen.

o Some contributors, especially academics, are used to this type of collaborative work and may find some of these guide-lines redundant and unnecessary. However, since some of the writers are new to the concept, they may need the addi-tional, more detailed information.

o Originally this book had been planned to be around 320 pages, but my most recent estimate, leads me to believe that it will be approximately 400 pages, and I do not intend to surpass that. I also understand some concerns about the lim-ited number of pages I have suggested to some authors, which may restrict or force them to condense their topics. However, as explained on page 1 of the Guidelines, this book intends to be an introduction to a vast subject, rather than an exhaustive dissertation about each one of the topics. Because some of the topics have been studied or pub-lished at a much deeper level, end notes and bibliographic notes are strongly suggested. One of our primary intentions is to describe and take inventory of the impact of the last wave of Azorean emigration.

o Although I will be suggesting a number of pages to each of the contributing authors, that is just a suggestion and whenever one need one or two more pages to present his/her topic, please feel free to do so. We will do our best to try to accommodate the extra pages. However, the number of suggested pages is not arbitrary, and much thought has been devoted to the structure of the entire project. Page spacing should be at 1 1/2 spaces (no single or double spacing)

o The suggested topic title presented on the outline is simply a suggestion and the individual author may/should use an-other, more appropriate title for his/her article.

o I did not include the list of all the contributing authors for each one of the topics, because I am still finalizing some de-tails. However, if you feel that you need to contact someone else who may be addressing a topic that you consider im-portant to avoid duplication or for some other reason, please feel free to contact me and I will supply you with email, phone or address information on the person the particular topic has been assigned to.

o I strongly suggest that all inquiries, clarifications, correspondence, manuscripts, and any information related to this book be directed to my attention: 3908 Sophist Drive, San Jose, CA 95132 (home); Email: goulartT@comcast.net; (510) 714-6133 (cel. phone and best number to reach me!); (408) 272-1201 (home); (510) 742-6406 (work-Coast Drywall Inc.)

o Some of the contributors have expressed that they are more fluent in Portuguese, but since all manuscripts will be sub-ject to at least two editing revisions, it would be helpful that, whenever possible, manuscripts are submitted in English, even if the sentence structure needs substantial editing. Since English is second language for most of us, our editor Marilyn Harper will help make us all look good!!!

o I will be on vacation in Europe from May 30-June 15 and from July 20-August 3. During those periods of time, I will not be able to be reached by phone, but I will be checking and responding to my emails on a regular basis.

o Manuscripts should be composed (preferably) in Microsoft WORD software.

Manuscript deadline: By September 30, 2007

By August 31, 2007 (if in Portuguese)
