"Power of Spirit", is now underway. In the research and writing stage, this book will document the history of many of the important Portuguese churches in California. Portuguese immigrants brought with them a rich cultural heritage based in large part around the Catholic Church. Many of the larger Portuguese communities built great churches which became important landmarks, gathering places and community centers which remain important for the very same reasons today. This is the start of a page for "Power of Spirit" which will be updated from time to time as the book progresses.

“Power of the Spirit” is a substantial contribution to the documentation of the history of the Portuguese immigrants in California. The Catholic Church both as a religious organization and a physical gathering place, as always played a pivotal role in the lives of the Portuguese immigrants. Joe Machado and his team of volunteer researchers are busily at work, researching and documenting the significant influence of the Portuguese in building and developing these churches and communities throughout California.

Under the auspices of the Portuguese Heritage Publications of California, and Joe Machado's leadership, the “Power of the Spirit” project is well on its way. However, due to the depth level of research required and the vast geographical area of coverage, Joe could use additional volunteers to carry out research on the churches in the following localities:
