The presentation in Tulare will be followed by presentations in San Jose on March 27th, Berkeley on April 4th, and Fresno on April 24th.

The author, Dr. Alvin R. Graves, made the study of the Portuguese in the California dairy industry his lifelong interest. Earlier in his life, he spent over 12 years studying this unique aspect of California agriculture. His Master’s thesis, Azorean Portuguese: Portuguese Dairymen in the San Joaquin Valley of California, and his PHD dissertation, Immigrants in Agriculture: The Portuguese Californians, 1850 1970’s form the basis for this new book. Recently, he returned to his work, sacrificing a year away from his livelihood to update, polish and detail his original work, transforming it from a doctoral thesis into wonderfully readable story, without losing its factual basis. The personal accounts, family stories, and photographs personify and balance the factual data on farming and immigration, presented in well-organized, easy-to-read tables.

Portuguese Heritage Publications of California is a newly formed, non-profit corporation consisting entirely of volunteers who recognize the importance of researching and documenting important aspects of the Portuguese experience in California. The organization is an outgrowth of the research project that resulted in the publication of "The Holy Ghost Festas".

The Role of the Portuguese in the California Dairy Industry

The dairy industry is one of the major economic sectors in California. One of the interesting but largely underestimated aspects of this industry is the role that Portuguese immigrants and their successors have played in building this business. A soon-to-be-published book, The Portuguese Californians, Immigrants in Agriculture provides an important perspective on the development of the dairy industry in our State. The book combines an extensive study of the Portuguese in California with personal accounts and experiences that add the human touch to this detailed work. Historic photographs and interesting graphic information provide information that has previously been unavailable.

The author, Alvin R. Graves, has made the study of the Portuguese in the dairy industry his major interest over many years. He has spent over 12 years studying this unique aspect of California agricultural activities. His Master’s thesis, Azorean Portuguese: Portuguese Dairymen in the San Joaquin Valley of California and his PHD dissertation, Immigrants in Agriculture: The Portuguese Californians, 1850 1970’s form the basis for this new book. In collaboration with Portuguese Heritage Publications of California, a nonprofit educational organization, these research projects have been updated and expanded for everyone interested in the California dairy industry or in the role that Portuguese immigrants played in making this industry so important for California.

Portuguese Heritage Publications of California is a newly formed, non-profit corporation consisting entirely of volunteers who recognize the importance of researching and documenting important aspects of the Portuguese experience in California. The organization is an outgrowth of a research project that resulted in the publication of The Holy Ghost Festas. Over 100 researchers worked together to collect the oral and written histories of the independent organizations that have organized and celebrated this important cultural event in California since the late 1800’s. The first printing of 4500 copies was sold out within eight months and a second printing copies has just been completed.
