Every attempt was made to include every festa held on a regular basis in the State of California. Extensive interviews with older generation individuals, hours of research in newspaper libraries, and some difficult to obtain private organization records and meeting minutes were used as a basis to cross reference facts and establish dates.Though the book is about the Holy Ghost Festas, in a way it traces the history of the Portuguese immigration and settlement of California.

It is amazing how many communities in California possessed a large enough Portuguese population to have had, at one time or another, a church (most likely), a hall (sometimes), and a Holy Ghost festa. Today when we see the large festas in San Jose, Gustine, and other places, it is hard to remember there are many more places where the festa, hall, and church (sometimes) are gone for good.
