CONSIDERING THAT:

  • The history of the presence of the Portuguese in California is not better known because there is very little research and a limited number of publications about it.
  • Many historical documents have been/are being lost every year.
  • Most Portuguese-Americans still maintain links with their roots through these celebrations.
  • We are a generation with the skills and the emotional connection to the roots of these traditions.
  • It is our duty not to let them disappear forever. Let's preserve it!
  • We still have people/sources alive today who are founders (or related to) of these organizations.
  • Frequently we find people (historians and students) searching for this type of information.
  • Some aspects of the celebration may be controversial (maybe even offensive to some), but they go on strong throughout the state, providing a unique social, cultural and religious context.
  • We run the risk of overlooking this movement and the strength and dedication of thousands who have dedicated their efforts to the preservation of a very cherished tradition.

PURPOSE and OBJECTIVES:

  • Compilation of facts of an important part of the life of the Portuguese in California.
  • Preservation of the memories of a long-lasting community tradition.
  • A Legacy and a debt towards future Portuguese-American generations.
  • An opportunity for many to participate in a book publication.
  • A tribute to the volunteers of the Holy Ghost societies.
  • A reasonable "excuse" to gather representatives of all organizations one day in 2001- OCT. 13.
  • This will not be an exhaustive study, but simply a historical and statistical compilation of facts/events pertaining to our most outstanding social and religious activity, and the ground work for future research and investigation.

FORMAT RECOMMENDATIONS for submission of research materials.

All text should be saved and presented in computer diskette

(if possible - very helpful) IBM compatible: Microsoft Word or Text Only file

Macintosh: Microsoft Word or text file

* Hard copies will also be acceptable, if above recommendations are not possible

Scanned materials shall be done in equipment providing the highest resolution/quality possible--we prefer to scan photographs. whenever possible.

Whenever artifacts, documents, buildings, etc. may need to be photographed, we will provide a professional to address those needs. All researchers shall make arrangements with representatives of the organizations to have those items properly copied/photographed.

Whenever it is possible to borrow pictures (preferably originals), documents, etc., we will promptly return them to the proper organization or person, after the necessary scanning and/or copying. Prior to accepting any documentation, researchers must make a list of items being loaned - signed by the person to whom items are to be returned, to avoid possible future disputes when materials are returned.

All researchers who prefer to do their work in the Portuguese language, we respectfully suggest they allow enough time for the translations to be done on a timely fashion.

All documents, pictures and other loaned articles, after copying, will be returned in person, by carrier service or US Post Office certified mail within a reasonable time.

All articles may be subject to editing and changes to be proposed to authors for approval before final print.

All article authors will commit to exhaust and explore all available sources when preparing their work.

Researchers shall keep copies of all their original work, in case, for some unfortunate reason, materials are misplaced or lost. Remember that we are working with over 100 organizations and thousands of pieces of information.

Whenever it is more practical to have a local photographer hired to document an important item or event, all expenses incurred by the researcher will be promptly reimbursed.

35mm camera pictures are recommended and easier to handle than slides, videos, or any other means. IMPORTANT: Do never write on the back of pictures, because ink will permeate and ruin it, with time. For photo description and copyrights/credit to owner, please attach a label to back of photo

It would be extremely helpful to calculate the number of copies to print, for all people in contact with the different organizations, to find out how many copies each organization would commit to buy.
